Geographical mobility of labour

Mobility of Labour means the movement of labour from one occupation (job) to another occupation and from one place to another place.
Immobility of Labour, as against the mobility of labour the non-movement of labour from one labour to another and from one place to another place is known as labour immobility.

 Geographical mobility of labour
Movement of labour from one place to another place is known as geographical mobility of labour.
There are some reasons for labour immobility; these are called barriers to labour mobility. The causes of geographical mobility are given below.
(a) People hesitate to move from place to place because of the huge monetary cost such as the cost of selling and buying of house, expense of movement of family etc.
(b) Unavailability of housing facilities (Availability of rented house, shortage of houses for sale etc.) prevents moving from one place to another place.
(c) Some social factors also stop workers from moving from place to place, because they do not wish to leave their families and friends.
(d) Education facilities such as system of schooling or mode of teaching may be different at different places.  This may also cause a barrier to move from place to place
(e) Other reasons such as, shortage of workers, or local pay agreement also obstruct the mobility of labour.
